What can i say about my study programme and the musical performance
career in the university of Chile?
First of all, most of the courses given are basically just European
and White supremacy on almost every aspect, is true that the contents and
teaching methods are pretty good. We have very good classes of Music theory,
Harmony and advances methods and technical resources for the music performance,
but as a Latin America Musician and artist we need so much more than that, we
have no idea about ourselves, our music and the history of our composers, at
the end we are just a bad copy of European musicians.
We don’t need to know the 5th Symphony of
Beethoven to study music as some teacher said in the radio.
Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t erase everything and start
again, every culture has something important to teach us to be a better artist
and musician. We need to open our mind about the music of our people, and then
study them, otherwise all we are doing fall short of worthwhile. Even European Teachers
and Universities know that when a musician or a composer doesn’t know about the
popular music of his country, his work, most of the time, is meaningless.
And talking about buildings and infrastructure, there is not
much to say because is basically a disaster, the rooms are very old and not
conditioned for musical studies. The library is small and very disorganized, though
it is essential for our courses.
It´s sad to know that, despite being Latino, they don´t teach you symphonies or music of important musics of our lands
